Multicultural Toys and Imaginative Play
for Pre-School and Toddler Age

Book Club Learnings:

Thanks to those who joined for a rich discussion during Session 2 of our Parent Book Club, focused on the preschool - Kindergarten years. This year, Northwood PTA hosts a 4-part book club, discussing portions of How to Raise an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi.

Author Ibram X Kendi encourages parents and caregivers to, "seek out toys and games that reflect our child's complexion and culture, but also reflect the complexions and cultures of others. One of the most important forms of childproofing the environment [against racist ideas] is ensuring the child's toy box reflects the multiracial, multiethnic, multicultural world."

One idea that came up in the conversation was how to incorporate diverse cultures in the imaginative play at this young age. Click below for some suggestions on figurines/dolls, cooking toys, puzzles etc. that can help foster curiosity and broaden a child’s cultural knowledge - great tools to introduce further conversations!
